Goal 1: eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
Goal 1: eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
Goal 1 is to reduce by half the proportion of people living on less than a dollar a day, and to reduce by half the proportion of people who suffer from hunger. A key first step towards global development, this goal aims at empowering individuals, groups and entire nations.
In our world today:
- Close to 1 billion people live on less than $1 a day -what we call extreme poverty.
- The proportion of people living in poverty droped since 1990, but much of this progress can be attributed to rapid economic growth in Eastern and Southern Asia.
Progress on Goal 1:
- The number of people living with less than $1 a day droped to less than 1 billion from 1.2 billion in 1990. If this trends persists, the poverty reduction target will be met globally and in most regions.
- Extreme poverty in sub-Saharan declined by 6% since 1990, but the region needs to do more to reduce poverty by half by 2015.
- The propotion of children under five who are hungry and underweight declined significantly in all regions, and particularly in Eastern and Western Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean.
